His father was Heisman Trophy recipient Tom Harmon and his mother was Elyse Knox, an actress and artist. His two older sisters are both actresses as well. After graduating from high school in 1970, Harmon received a two-year associate's degree at Pierce College in Los Angeles then transferred to the University of California, Los Angeles. From 1972 – 1973, he was the starting quarterback for the UCLA Bruins football team. He received the National Football Foundation Award for All-Round Excellence in 1973. He graduated from college in 1974 with a B.A. in Communications. He originally wanted to pursue a career in advertising but became an actor instead, appearing in several medical and law enforcement television series. His best known role is on NCIS, which he has had a major role in since 2003.
