Costars And Film Professionals Tell Stories Of Tom Hanks Being A Total Pro

It won’t surprise you to hear that Tom Hanks is considered one of the nicest guys in Hollywood. There are countless times Tom Hanks was a total pro, and his resume reads like a laundry list of awards and accolades. From Golden Globes to Oscars and even the Presidential Medal of Freedom, Hanks is an award show mainstay, thanks to his impressive body of work. But that doesn't mean he's stuffy. Far from it - stories about Tom Hanks reveal just how great he is.

Fans love Hanks for his willingness to crack jokes on Saturday Night Live or crash a bride and groom's photo shoot. But what do his co-stars think of him? Surely he can't be that fabulous? True, some celebrities dare to hate him, but most costars tell tales about Tom Hanks arriving on set with a warm grin and a tireless work ethic. It's enough to make even the most hardened cynic daydream about making it big in the movies.

Aaron Eckhart

Aaron Eckhart starred alongside Hanks in Sully, and he knew he was among royalty. Eckhart told Newsweek, "I can die now. I checked off two of my bucket list in one... I’m a huge fan of Clint’s [director Clint Eastwood] and Tom’s." He went on to praise the Hanks's poise:

"I just heard Tom give a speech two nights ago at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. It was one of the best speeches [I’ve ever heard]... the most affecting, emotional, rational speeches done with absolute mastery and clarity. Everybody after that speech was stunned. I would vote for Tom [for president] in a second. If our politicians could speak as well as Tom could... he should be a shoe-in.

"I think people would actually want Tom to run for president of the United States. They have confidence that he could do the job - and they have confidence that he could get elected."

Charlize Theron

Charlize Theron admitted to W Magazine that she had a crush on Hanks while growing up in South Africa: "I loved him without knowing his name. He was that guy with the dog shaking its drool all over the place in Turner & Hooch. I loved Tom Hanks as 'the guy.'"

Theron has yet to work with her crush, but who knows what the future holds.

Emily Blunt

Emily Blunt starred opposite Hanks in Charlie Wilson's War. She worried that Hanks might be a little weirded-out filming a sexy scene with a 24-year-old costar, because not only could she be his daughter, but she is also friends with his son, Colin.

However, things didn't go the awkward way Blunt anticipated. She told GQ: "But Tom is really sexy. I promise you! He just made it effortless, to do those scenes. And he was so protective of me. He's a real gent."

Emma Watson

Emma Watson spoke to E! News about filming the 2017 movie The Circle with Hanks. She was concerned that he wouldn't live up to his glowing reputation:

"There's no way he's going to be as nice as everyone says he is and whatever else. And then he was! He's so generous and funny and easy-going and he's all the things you would want him to be. So I'm very happy to be able to report that to you sincerely because it would have broken my heart, I think, if Tom wasn't Tom."

Meg Ryan

"I really admire [Hanks]," Meg Ryan told Vanity Fair. "He’s just easy to be around, and that’s a big compliment because he’s so smart. He’s kind and he gets people."

Hanks and Ryan have worked together multiple times since their first film, Joe Versus the Volcano (1990).

Pam Grier

Pam Grier talks about being cast in Larry Crowne with Dallas South News:

"I just love Tom Hanks! He wrote [the film] and directed it, and his neighbors across the street are Cedric the Entertainer and his wife is Taraji P. Henson, so he’s really inclusive. He loves stories, from Forrest Gump to Philadelphia, and he puts his own money on the line. He’s so authentic and accurate and loves people, we need to just clone him!"

Paul Bettany

Paul Bettany worked with Hanks on Ron Howard's thriller The Da Vinci Code. Bettany played a seriously twisted and sinister character, so he probably appreciated Hanks's gallows humor. Bettany told the Globe & Mail: "As for Tom, he's incredibly funny and very relaxed on set. He's funny in a very surprisingly dark way."

Ron Howard

As a director, Ron Howard has worked with Hanks on multiple occasions. Howard told the The Sun, "I’d be lying if I said I’m not always looking for something we could do together cos [sic] I always feel it’s time well spent on every level... He’s always been grounded, centered, funny, smart and talented, but also someone who has a reasonable sense of the world and his place in it."

Howard praised Hanks's work ethic as well, saying, "He’s still entirely dedicated, fully prepared, and in fact he may work harder [than when he was younger]."

Steven Spielberg

When Steven Spielberg chooses someone to star in his movies, you know they've got talent. But when he praises someone, you know they're pretty freaking cool.

Spielberg and Hanks worked together on 2015's Bridge of Spies. Of Hanks, Spielberg told Time"I was able to snag one of the greatest living actors to represent the virtues and the principles that this character showed all of us in real life."

The pair has worked together many times over the years. Hanks appeared in Spielberg-directed projects including Saving Private Ryan and Catch Me If You Can, and the two have been friends for a long time.

Taraji P. Henson

Taraji P. Henson costarred alongside Hanks in Larry Crowne. She made it clear she's a big Hanks fan when she spoke to the Huffington Post:

"He’s one of those actors who can just take on any role. What I think is so great about him is, because he’s still a very down to earth, big, big superstar, it makes it easier for him to play these common characters, like regular people, and believe it, and not be Tom Hanks. Some people get too big and you can’t separate the star from the character."
